Burberry Open Their Flagship Store in Fletcher Priest’s Knightsbridge Estate Project

Burberry have opened a new flagship store at the corner of Sloane Street and Brompton Road, becoming the first tenant to open a flagship in the exciting redevelopment of the northern end of The Knightsbridge Estate – a large, mixed use city block in one of London’s most well-known locations. The Estate’s other retail spaces within the redevelopment are scheduled to open later this year, followed next year by the residences and offices above.

The interior of the new store was designed by Vincenzo De Cotiis, and is the first to feature the brand’s new global store concept that connects ‘our past, present and future’ according to Burberry CEO Marco Gobbetti. Vogue called the new flagship ‘a perfect marriage of old and new.’

Owned by The Olayan Group, working with Chelsfield as asset and development manager, The Knightsbridge Estate development consists of an entire city block bound by Sloane Street, Brompton Road and Basil Street. Situated in the heart of London’s designated international district for shopping, work and leisure, it is a major mixed-use redevelopment comprising 340,000 sq ft of retail, office, residential and hospitality, along with major works to the area’s underground station.

This hugely complex project is both a sensitive restoration and a creative redesign. We have worked from historic drawings and photography to restore original designs, including William Duvall Goodwin’s cupola for No.1 Sloane Street.

The entrance to Knightsbridge Underground Station, which stood on the site of Burberry’s new flagship prior to the renovation, has been moved along Brompton Road as part of the station access upgrade, allowing for creation of a safer, wider pavement as well as the restoration of the original corner shopfront in a substantial bronze design. Within our scheme, we have reinforced individual buildings’ settings and purpose by vertically aligning uses into recognisable ‘houses’ and restored the magnificent and uninterrupted run of gables along its perimeter.
